Visit the Food Culture Museum and learn about the history of sushi through an exhibition. Learn the traditional technique of polishing lacquered chopsticks and then a cooking lesson on how to make rolled sushi using the local ingredients.

Miketsukuni Wakasa Obama Food Culture Museum:Polishing WAKASA lacquered chopsticks and cooking class on making rolled sushi. 

  

Schedule   10:30 Visiting Sushi exhibition in the museum on the first floor - 11:00 Chopsticks polishing on the second floor – 11:45 Cooking lesson on the first floor 12:30 End  

  

Wakasa lacquered chopsticks gained international recognition when Mr. Barack Obama became the US president, and Obama city sent a pair of the chopsticks as a gift for his presidency.    

  

After learning about the history and development of sushi in Japan on the 1st floor exhibition, you can then polish and finish your own Wakasa lacquered chopsticks on the second floor. Making your own chopsticks by polishing is a unique experience that you can’t find in other places. Then you’ll have a cooking lesson of Temari (round-shaped) Sushi with the local ingredients such as red snapper pickled with vinegar and roasted mackerel soup in the kitchen studio on the first floor in the Museum. Finally you’ll be able to enjoy tasting the sushi and soup that you made, by using your own brand-new chopsticks.

Q: How do I get there?  

A: 17 min. walk from Obama JR station

Q: Is it difficult to polish chopsticks?  

A: Polishing chopsticks is done with fine sand paper. Children can also take part and staff will guide you with instructions.

Q: For the sushi, what kind of ingredients will be used?  

A: Ingredients for sushi are fillet of vinegared sea bream, sliced fermented mackerel, seasonal vegetables such as eggplant, red paprika, turnip.

A: There are several experiences such as agate polishing (900 yen), texturing of agate thin (900yen), color paper making (900 yen), Postcard plow (900 yen) and folding dyed (500 yen).

A: This museum is located in the port area and you can visit the fish market and Fisherman’s wharf (shop, restaurants, Cabin Cruiser Tour around Sotomo)
